4ºESO ARTS (Plástica)
Hello my dear students!!!
I hope that you are all alright!!!
Since it might be a problem getting the materials you need for this subject, the paper for example, I am going to give you another type of job.
For this one you only need a soft lead pencil (3B or higher), a regular black pen or thin-liner,and drawing paper.
Anyway, I am sure this insulation is going to last much more than we expected, so start considering buying what you need ( watercolour, and watercolour paper) online.
THE WATERCOLOUR PROJECT STILL MANDATORY, ANYWAY!!!!
If you don´t have the material now, work on this new project. You might be able to get it later. We will see....
We are going to work with one of the basic visual elements, the light, or you can say as well, the value.
Normaly, when we try to observe and analyse the light of an image, or from reality, we take the colour out of the scene. We try to imagine the image in black and white. This way we don´t get confused with the different brightness of each colour, and we can focus only in the value of light.
But, what´s the value of light? Simple. Is how much white light is in each part of the image. How dark, or how bright is each part.
- Highlight
- light
- Halftone
- Form shadow
- Cast shadow
and many more....
Here you can see several values, in the representation of a lighted sphere.
Another important thing to notice is that is light and the shadow representation what give us the impression and perception of volume!
And yet another, with a slightly different vocabulary:

It is also important to understand that the direction of the light change the shape of the shadows in the object, and in the cast shadow. Notice this is the drawings above!
We are going to start doing a gradation.
In a drawing paper we are going to trace with a ruler, 4 stripes with 9 squares each one. Each square is going to have 3,5 cm side.
This way you are going to have 7 steps of grays, and black and white for the two end-squares of each stripe.
Something like this:
As you can see, I have not divide the four stripes into 9 squares, but you must do it.
- In the first one you have to use a black pen, roller pen or thin-liner, and make a gradation using hatching lines.
- In the second, you use the same material, but this time you do cross-hatchig.
- The third one is done with doodles or loose lines, and the same material.
- In the last one , we are going to use the soft 3B pencil to do the gradation, step by step. The smudging technique is to rubber with your finger the lead on the paper, to extend it.
We can call it also an sfumato.
In this video these tecniques are explain. There are alot of them in youtube!!!
So. This is it for now!
Be safe, take care!
GREETINGS!!!

Hi Carlos, I'm Iván Baeza. I have a question. I have a 2B pencil. Can I use that pencil or I need to use the 3B pencil?
ResponderEliminarYou will do alright wiyh the 2B pencil! No problem!
EliminarGreetings!
Okey, thanks!
